The VertiGIS Studio Printing Engine is a new product that can be installed alongside of the existing VertiGIS Studio Printing software to provide an alternative method for processing print jobs in your VertiGIS Studio Web applications.
Key Concepts
The Printing Engine is an optional installation, but does offer some key enhancements over the existing VertiGIS Studio Printing.
The Printing Engine consists of a package of Geoprocessing Tools that are deployed to an on-premise ArcGIS Enterprise installation in your environment. The print processing is therefore handled by your ArcGIS Server, and not by the machine where the VertiGIS Studio Printing application is installed. This is a key difference with VertiGIS Studio Printing which uses a Chromium based print engine on the server where you install the product.
The Printing Engine uses ArcGIS PAGX Layout items stored in your ArcGIS Enterprise Portal for defining the prints, as opposed to the Templates that VertiGIS Studio Printing uses with the Chromium engine.
ArcGIS Enterprise installations do have optional print utilities of their own (see What is the difference between an ESRI Printing Tools print and a VSP Engine Tools print), but the VertiGIS Studio Printing Engine specifically integrates with Studio Web Applications.
There is currently no SaaS implementation available for the new Print Engine, but this may change in the future.
Installation
Our Support Center has an extensive FAQ section for various scenarios you may encounter when installing the VertiGIS Printing Engine, and we also document a typical install process.
It is important to note that unlike other Studio products the installer for the Printing Engine does not install the tools to the machine where it is executed. The installer instead provides a guided experience for deploying the print engine tools to your ArcGIS Enterprise Portal, and the installer can be removed from the installation machine after the tools are successfully deployed.
Note: The preferred environment for running the installer to deploy the Printing Engine tools is a host machine with ArcGIS Pro installed. This can be your desktop machine. Alternatively, you may run the installer directly on the server where your ArcGIS Server is installed as part of your ArcGIS Enterprise deployment. |
As noted in the installation documentation (and copied in the screenshot below) there are two versions of the Printing Engine installer available:
You will want to select the version that corresponds to your target ArcGIS Enterprise installation. This is required due to differences in the Esri Cartographic Information Model (CIM) used in the respective versions of their products.
Managing Layouts
New layouts can be created in the existing VertiGIS Studio Printing designer provided the ArcGIS Pro Layout mode is toggled on after the Printing Engine is installed. You can also convert existing print templates into layouts, or import a PAGX layout file from ArcGIS Pro into the VertiGIS Studio Printing designer.
Once a layout is created or saved in the VertiGIS Studio Printing designer it will become available to use in any Studio Web applications that are set to use the printing engine tools.
Important: Note that at this time any Print Previews performed in the VertiGIS Studio Printing designer will default to using the Chromium engine, and not the newer Printing Engine Tools. |
It is also possible to publish layouts directly to your Enterprise Portal from ArcGIS Pro using the separately licensed VertiGIS Studio Desktop for ArcGIS Pro product.
Integration with Studio Web
A Studio Web application's printing component will default to using VertiGIS Studio Printing and the Chromium engine. To use the new Print Engine Tools it is necessary to configure the application with the URL of the geoprocessing tools on your ArcGIS Server.
