This guide details configuring email notifications using Papercut Mailbox as a local SMTP server for safe testing. Install Papercut on your server, configure ConnectMaster (CM) to use SMTP at localhost:25, and test emails using CM’s test feature. Emails appear only in Papercut, never sent externally, with Windows notifications for incoming messages. This setup is ideal for development and QA environments.
1. Install Papercut Mailbox on the Server
First, download and install Papercut Mailbox on your server.
Papercut is a lightweight tool that allows you to:
Start a local SMTP server, and
View all emails sent to it (including attachments)
This helps you verify if your application is sending email correctly, without any real email delivery.
Once installed, launch the Papercut application.
You should see a UI similar to the one shown in the attachment. Papercut will automatically start listening for SMTP traffic.
2. Configure SMTP Settings in ConnectMaster (CM)
Now open the ConnectMaster (CM) Application.
Steps:
Go to Library.
Open Project Settings.
Locate the Email / SMTP configuration section.
Enter the following SMTP details:
SMTP Server: localhost
Port: 25
Additional Notes:
The From Name and From Email Address fields can be anything.
These are used only for display and testing purposes.Because Papercut captures emails locally, nothing will be sent externally.
3. Test Email Sending From CM
In CM, use the “Test Email Recipient” feature to confirm that email sending works.
Enter any test recipient email address (it can be fake).
Click Send Test Email.
If everything is configured correctly, the email should appear immediately in your Papercut Mailbox.
You will be able to view:
Subject
Recipient
Body content
Attachments (if any)
All emails remain inside Papercut.
They are never forwarded to real email servers, ensuring zero risk.
4. Windows Notification for Incoming Emails
Papercut also provides Windows desktop notifications when a new test email arrives.
You will see a pop-up notification similar to the screenshot in the attachment.
This helps confirm in real time that your SMTP test emails are being received.
Conclusion
By using Papercut Mailbox and configuring CM to send emails through localhost:25, you can safely test your SMTP email notifications without using a live mail server. This setup is ideal for development, testing, and QA environments.
