The Save to ArcGIS tool in Geocortex Viewer for HTML5 is a handy tool that can help you export your mapping data from Essentials into a web map. This process can help facilitate the transition from Geocortex Essentials to VertiGIS Studio Web.
However, there are a few important things to consider when preparing to use this tool. Due to differences in technology, additional steps may be necessary to ensure your data is successfully copied and that the resulting web map functions correctly. The following points address some of these considerations:
Authentication:
- In order to use the Save to ArcGIS tool, Essentials Manager must be configured with ArcGIS identities. Furthermore, the user exporting the web map must be able to sign into the viewer using their ArcGIS identity. If Essentials Manager is configured with Windows sign-in, the Save to ArcGIS tool will not be available. In this case, it may be simpler to configure the web maps from scratch in Map Viewer or ArcGIS Pro.
- The Save to ArcGIS tool will not work if you use Integrated Windows Authentication (IWA) to sign into Portal and have anonymous access disabled. To get the tool to work, you will need to temporarily allow Anonymous Authentication on the Portal Web Adaptor.
- If your map services in Essentials include token-secured ArcGIS Server services (i.e. not federated with Portal or stored in ArcGIS Online), users will be prompted for ArcGIS Server credentials when they open the resulting web map. This is because credentials stored in the Essentials Manager Service Connections settings cannot be copied into the web map.
Content:
- All HTML hyperlinks, including viewer commands, should be removed from Feature Descriptions and Feature Long Descriptions in Essentials Manager to avoid complications. Failure to do so may result in a corrupted web map.
- Some replacement tokens are made available by Geocortex Essentials. Since web maps are governed by Esri's API, these tokens are not accessible in the new framework. Therefore, you may notice that some of your replacement tokens do not work.
- The following do not get exported when using the Save to ArcGIS tool:
- Viewer configuration
- Workflows
- Reports
- Print templates
- Data Links
Display:
- There are some differences in how layers will be displayed in the Layers list. The most notable are:
- Web maps do not support folders. If your Layer List in Essentials contains folders, they will be ignored, meaning any layers contained within them will not be grouped together.
- Map service sublayers cannot be separated from each other in web maps. If your Layer List in Essentials arranges map service sublayers into separate areas, the resulting web map will recombine them all into one group. The order of the sublayers within the group is based on their order at the map service's REST endpoint.
- The order of the layers in the web map's Layers list is determined by the Map Services list in Essentials Manager, not the Layer List.
- The web map's initial extent will not necessarily be the same as the initial extent configured in Essentials Manager. To change the initial extent, open the web map in Map Viewer, pan/zoom the map to the desired location, and save the web map.
