Labels are highly useful in allowing users to distinguish between features that have been selected on the map. However, in some cases, they may clutter the map or cause confusion (i.e. if the label is set to an ID number that the user is unfamiliar with.) In these situations, you may wish to either change the labels or prevent them from appearing altogether.

Where are the label configuration settings in Web Designer?

Similar to layer configuration, labels are not actually set in Web Designer. To access these settings, you will want to open the map in Esri's Map Viewer. You can get to it from Web Designer by following these steps:

1. Click the Map component in the Components list.
2. Below the title of your web map, click the "Open in ArcGIS Online" or "Open in ArcGIS Enterprise" hyperlink.
3. On the overview page that opens, click Open in Map Viewer.
4. Use the Sign In button in Map Viewer if you are not automatically logged in.

Changing the labels

The process is somewhat different depending on whether you are using Map Viewer or Map Viewer Classic, so please scroll down to the instructions that match your platform.

Map Viewer

Once you have your web map open in Map Viewer:

1. Click the Layers icon in the left toolbar.
2. Select the layer whose labels you would like to modify.
3. In the right toolbar, click the Pop-ups icon.
4. Change the Title. You can add text, replacement tokens, or a combination of both.
5. Save the web map.

Map Viewer Classic

If your web map opened in Map Viewer Classic:

1. Under the Contents list, hover over the layer whose labels you would like to modify and click the More Options icon.
2. Click Configure Pop-up.
3. Change the Pop-up Title. You can add text, replacement tokens, or a combination of both.
4. Save the web map.

Removing the labels

Labels are set to use the title that is configured in the layer's pop-up settings in Map Viewer, but will default to the feature's Object ID if no title is available. Therefore, simply removing the title will not remove the labels. Luckily, there is a solution, though it is important to note that this will also remove the title from the Results List, Result Details, and Result Summary.

Map Viewer
