Identify specific layers - results order

I recently read the following post on creating an identify tool that targets specific layers:

VertiGIS Support confirmed with me that if a targeted identify tool uses multiple layers, the results are not necessarily presented in the same order as the source list, i.e., the user clicks an area where there are both water lines and fire hydrants, the source order below wouldn't return the water line results first.

      ]

I would like to see the results order reflect the source order or otherwise be configurable.
