Hi Jake - let's explore this ... today if you are using application management such as d-t-p (dev - test - prod) then as you push your app from one environment to another it is creating a copy of your app configuration and your web maps and web scenes (workflow, reports, and print templates will be supported for this very soon).

In effect, you have a complete backup of your app.

Add to that the ability to download a .zip of the app json / layout xml for any of your environments that exists today.

Since there is no server (the only persistent storage is in your Esri portal) ... what additional thing might we do that could help for 'backup'?

Ideally provide some way to build a script that performs the ‘Download an app’ process that i can run from command line.  I can do this with the json through the portal item id but I don't seem to be able to access the layout.xml.

It is a nice thing to be able to have when everything goes to heck to be able to rollback to two days ago.

In order to keep a Studio Web app to a single portal item we encode and embed the layout XML directly in the app.json.

    Look for <layout
