Leveraging attribute filters in Access Control (6-minute view)
- In this tech tip we show how to configure attribute filters in Access Control. Attribute filters are permissions that limit who can access which features based on the feature attributes.
- Geocortex Access Control attribute filters provide feature-level security by restricting access based on attribute values. While ArcGIS sharing controls access at the web map or layer level, attribute filters allow administrators to control which specific records users can see. Filters use SQL-style expressions (for example, Status = 'Closed') and can be applied to all users, groups, or individual users. Common use cases include limiting field workers to viewing only records assigned to them or showing users only data relevant to their role. This enables granular, user-specific access without duplicating layers or services.

Understanding permission inheritance in Access Control (8-minute view)
- Geocortex Access Control inherits security settings from ArcGIS Server. If access is denied at the ArcGIS level, it cannot be overridden; if allowed, Access Control can further restrict it. Within Access Control, permissions are inherited from parent items (service → layer → field), but child permissions override parent settings. When multiple permissions apply, precedence flows from All Users, to built-in groups, to ArcGIS groups, and finally individual users, with more specific permissions overriding broader ones. Advanced permissions are evaluated last.

Configuring Geometry Filters in Access Control (6-minutes view)
- We answer one of the most frequently asked questions about Access Control:
- How to filter by geometry?
- Geocortex Access Control attribute filters restrict feature access based on data values. Unlike ArcGIS sharing, which controls access at the service or layer level, attribute filters provide feature-level security. Administrators can create filter rules using SQL-style where clauses (for example, Status = 'Closed') to show only matching records. Filters can be applied to all users, groups, or specific users, enabling scenarios such as field workers seeing only service requests assigned to them. This allows highly granular, user-specific access to GIS data.
