Highlight transparency with overlapping objects

A client has a feature layer with a lot of overlapping objects. All these objects have a transparency set (e.g. 20%). When these objects are identified a highlight includes a transparency. When a lot of these highlighted objects overlap, there is no transparency anymore. Do you know what causes this and can something be adjusted to make sure this transparency does not stack?
