Agreeing with Martin and to add onto that, it was tedious to try and apply branding colors to an application when the only readily available color choice was the accent color. We had to download the app, open the JSON, change each color variable individually by supplying an RGB value, and upload the application again just to test where any color variable shows up.

It is an even greater challenge to try and remain compliant to web accessibility mandates that require a certain level of color contrast between different elements and text blocks on a web page. This is largely due how the color options overlap where you might not expect it (e.g. “secondary” color variables over “primary” color variables). A dialogue for a tool might have as many as seven color variables present between “primary”, “secondary”, “button”, and “accent” color variables which can then double because buttons can be in multiple states “enabled”, "disabled", "hovered", and "emphasized", all of which should be distinct between each other while also somehow contrasting with whatever is behind the button.

Greater control over the color options for individual components, at least layout components, will better equip end users to adhere to accessibility standards which is the primary goal while fitting their color branding in which is secondary. Alternatively, an easier way to apply color changes will help with testing.
