Access Control: Allowing attribute editing while disabling geometry editing.
We look for an option to allow attribute editing only to a group of field workers and geometry editing to another group of users, on the same feature class (hosted or referenced).
Communication with VertiGIS support concludes that this is currently not possible. It will be very useful for us if Access Control can treat the attribute editng and geometry editing separately so that rights to individual groups can be assigned accordingly.
We look forward to the possibilities in a recent produt enhancement.

Hi Shahadat Hossain you could potentially do this via Workflow forms in Studio Web from a user interface perspective. Studio Web allows you to show different interface elements to different users or groups, using the 'Visible To / Hidden From' property (docs)
Studio Workflow allows you to configure specific form functionality. What I'm picturing here is two different Workflows with forms that have attribute editing and geometry editing separate. In your Studio Web app, you'd include both forms and set the visibility based on the authenticated user's group.
This would only be a UI implementation. What this doesn't do is prevent editing at the REST endpoint level so in theory a savvy user could still get to the REST endpoint and craft a request that modifies attributes/geometry that you hadn't intended.0 -
Hi Gareth,
Thanks for the quick reply and the workaround.
Unfortunately, we do not have all the VG Studio components active for this project. We only use VG Access Control to set access to some hosted feature classes that are used in an ESRI Field Map (ArcGIS Enterprise Portal). We, therefore, need a solution that does not require a workflow workaround and also does not allow gemoetry modification using REST endpoint.
Greetings.

Ahh, in an Esri Field map perspective you might approach this in the same way using an Esri Smart Form, though to my knowledge that doesn't have the logic necessary to show/hide based on group.
I'd suggest looking at what VertiGIS Studio Mobile & Workflow can do for you here as it could help in this scenario, though I imagine you may not have the flexibility to introduce new tools at this point.

Yes, we are currently testing the VG Studio components and it will take a while to bring them in the production.
It is possible to limit the edit to attribute in the field map . The users can still edit geometries in the portal. Also as you said, Smart Editor also does not have the logic based on group.
I do not know why Access Control does not separate attribute editing and geometry editing.
Greetings
