Edit feature class - "No templates available"

All - trying to set up a very simple editalbe layer in HTML 5 viewer.  SDE configured, versioned, all good to go on the GIS desktop side. The editable properties exist in the map layer properties dialog - good there.  I added the feature class to the geocortex map and add the edit tool to the toolbar, so far, so good. when I click on 'add feature' I get a message that says 'no templates available'.  

 

Can't find any info on what I missed.  Perhaps a security step?

  You need to have a published feature service, not just a map service.  The feature service is what you need to edit and what Geocortex uses for its template.

  Also make sure you have at least one feature template in the MXD when you're publishing the feature service. It's good practice to see if editing works in the MXD before publishing the feature service.
