SetLayerDefinition - then zoom to extent

I have a worklfow that is setting the layer def, so then how do I zoom the maps to the extent of only the visible features? My guess is doing a query task, then unioning the returned geometries, then send that envelope to the ZoomtoExtent.

Is that the only way or is there something better that I'm missing?

  AFAIK the ArcGIS REST endpoint of a mapservice has no way of returning just the extent, so I'm afraid you're out of luck.
