using image layers from an image service

Has anyone had any luck adding image layers created on the fly (as specified in the raster rules, such as hillshade or slope in the case of the dem image service)?

i can certainly add the dem layer of an image service, but my user would also like to see slope, aspect, hillshade etc from the same image service.  according to the arcgis documentation, these derived layers can be specified in a rest service connection statement, but i could not get that to work.  any advise would be greatly appreciated.
