  Difficult to say without seeing the connection string. Check ConnectionStrings (http://www.connectionstrings.com/excel/) for formatting issues.

  Hi Steve,

   

  As Tom mentioned, it may be a problem with your connection string, but you may also want to confirm that you have the ODBC drivers installed on your system.  If not, you can download them here:

   

  https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=13255

  Thanks Danny, it was the ODBC drivers. evidently installing office was not enough.
