GeoCortex Essentials - performance in a VM environment?
Hello,
I have a test instance of GeoCortex Essentials in my (virtual) development server to work on a a prootype, and am getting ready to request my network operation team to stand up a server for production.
We use VMsware and the GeoCortex production server will be virtual (unless I am told by everyone to go for a physical server!). Initially, the html viewer will be used by ~300 internal staff members (City Government) and I plan to utilize Instant Search as much as possible, including indexing addresses, parcels, street names, points of interest etc.
If you have your GeoCotex Essentials installed in a virual server, can you share your VM setting for your server, and/or how the performance has been for you? Are there any tips/technical notes that I should be aware (or pass on to my net op team)?
Below is what I am considering - please feel free to comment and compare with your setting.
( ArcGIS 10.3.1 Server is in a separate virtual server. I plan to install ArcGIS Portal in the same server with GeoCortex Essentials).
CPU - 4 Cores
RAM - 12 GB
Network Storage, 100 GB
Windows Server 2012 r2
Thank you so much for your input!
Yeon
PS. Below is what I have learned from GeoCortex Support.
1. ArcGIS Portal and GeoCotex Essential can be installed to a same server - no known issue any more (used to have a port conflict).
2. Instant Search is being improved in Essentials Version 4.6! (I definitly plan to go with this one as soon as it gets out of beta testing).
3. NIC selection can be troublesome in VMware.
4. Use thick provisioning storage if possible.

We're running a very similar virtual server environment, the only difference being 16 GB of RAM instead of 12. We've have a good, consistent experience with our AGS services and Geocortex sites.
The only thing I have noticed is slower performance outside of our network, not so slow people can't use it but still slower than in network. I'm hoping we'll bring in a consultant eventually who knows more about web server optimization than we do.0 -
Thank you for sharing your experience. Glad to hear your GeoCortex Essnetial is working well in a virtual environment! Now I am going to ask for 16 GB RAM just to be safe. :)
I am curious why it is noticebly slow outside of your network - please share back with us if/when you find out why.0
