Instant Search HTTP Error -- Attempted maximum number of retries

I recieved this error recently when attempting to troubleshoot Instant Search for our map services.  It seems occurs when the scanning and indexer cannot connect to the service then tries again and again and again and again, etc.  In the specific case of the embedded image, the status bar would get to anywhere between 80-100% complete before throwing the error and starting the scanning over, apartently indefinately.

 

Is someone familiar with this error and what the underlying issue is?  It seems differnent than the other HTTP errors that pop up in the Instant Search tab.
