instant search indexes

This might be a silly question but...if I'm using the same map service in 4 different sites and instant search is being used in all 4 sites does the indexing process create 4 different search indexes?

  Pg 221 of the GE Admin guide says that: If a particular map service appears in more than one site, you only need to start scanning in one

   

  site—the sites will share the index.
