Inset map in print template?
Has anyone successfully made an inset map of say, where you are in relation to the whole state? I assume I would need a workflow to narrow down information for it.

Hi Jacqueline,
The closest thing we have to replicating an inset map in the print template would be playing around with the Overview Map and Main Map. If you swap the Overview Map so that it occupies a larger area and then laid the Main Map over top of it, that would probably be as close to an inset map as you can get. You can even change the Main Map's border colour to red so it matches the red box in the Overview Map.
Otherwise, yes, you can create a workflow to accomplish this as well. However, the result would be very similar to the outcome I mentioned above with the Overview and Main map. We just do not have any activity to connect the overview map to the inset map like they do in ArcMap.
I hope this helps.

Jacqueline,
Did you have any luck incorporating the suggested work around?0 -
no. I couldn't figure it out. 0 -
We use the Overview map on all of our templates and it works great. The only issue is the size of the red box on the overview inset. Since it is scaled to the main map size, if you print a small area the red box on the inset can be so small it's hard to see. We are a county, so I would image doing this for a state would compound the issue. 0 -
Hi everyone,
I'm guessing that Carmen had something like this in mind for her suggestion (drag the image to a new tab to see it slightly larger):

Here's what I did:- Modified one of the default print templates that ships with Essentials
- Removed the containers (rectangular shape controls) that draw the borders around the main and overview maps- it's hard to work when they get in the way
- Move/resized the _Overview control take up the space that the main map usually occupies
- Move/resized the _MainMap control to occupy an appropriate amount of space for an inset map
- Added back in a rectangular Shape control with a transparent background, red line colour, and line weight of 5
- Move/resized the controls that make up the legend to occupy the empty space left from the original overview map location
- Used right click > move to front/back whereever necessary to correct the drawing order or make it easier to grab and move elements
- Added the print template to my copy of the LA County demo site.
- In Essentials Manager > Overview Map I added Esri's World Steet Map, and modified the Initial Extent and Full Extent for the overview map.
Hope that helps!
