Translation of HTML5 Viewer / locales
Hi!
I'm a Geocortex user/administrator from Norway, and I'm using some norwegian language files/locales (Mapping.Infrastructure.nb-NO.json.js and Mapping.nb-NO.json.js). This works perfectly, but I have a question to those of you who are using other languages (other than english). How do you keep the locales in sync with the current version of the english ones? Do you manually copy the new strings from the english one and translate it, or do you use some kind of script?

This is actually something I used to do on a fairly regular basis while testing the viewer; I'd create dummy locales to ensure that developers hadn't hard-coded any strings in the interface (since this would mean they wouldn't be translatable) and that none of our localizable strings were manipulated in such a way that characters from outside of the base 256 characters would appear in the interface as '?' or other unexpected characers (I'm sure you occasionally get email addressing you as "Torbjørn"). I'd use Google Translate to give me a rough translation into a different script (Thai was one of my go-to languages), since it didn't matter if the translation was any good (I don't speak Thai*); I only cared that I didn't see English or corrupted characters in the interface.
I actually used Excel to do a chunk of the string manipulation so that I could take the invariant strings from the files and plug them straight into Google Translate. Once the strings were (poorly) translated, I could paste them back into the spreadsheet to create the json for the new locale file. I'm sure I've got an old spreadsheet rolling around on my hard drive somewhere that I can provide as a sample. I'll create a knowledge base article to go along with it.
*For those now wondering why Thai, if I don't speak it: it's an attractive script that is very obviously not a Western/Latin character set. Korean was a favourite for similar reasons.0 -
I'm not using scripts when creating/updating nl-NL language files (Dutch), only using the Compare plugin for Notepad++ and http://jsonlint.com/ to validate the files.
