Is fiddler the only tool recommended by Geocortex to be used for network traffic capture?
Hi,
For Network traffic capture between Client and server, Fiddler is the only tool mentioned across this support site. Is Fiddler like some recognised and recommended tool by Geocortex for this task? Are there any other tools recommended by Geocortex for the task?

Hi Srikanth,
Fiddler is our recommendation due to how robust it is, but if you are in a situation where you can't install it for whatever reason (perhaps a local security policy, or lack of admin rights on the workstation you are troubleshooting on), we can also use the browser developer tools to troubleshoot network traffic.
Additionally, Fiddler can act as a proxy in between your Essentials server and your map services, which is really powerful in a case where you are not having client issues, but rather issues with one server connecting to another. In that case, I don't think the browser developer tools will cut it.
I hope this helps!
Thanks,

Hi Srikanth,
It depends on what you're needing to look at, but Fiddler tends to be our go-to tool within Latitude. If you just want to look at what was requested and how long it took for those requests to be serviced, browsers' dev tools (F12) will often suffice.
If you want to record a set of requests for later playback, fiddle with and resend requests (hence the name), or do other, more complicated things (e.g., build a script) to help troubleshoot an issue, Fiddler is definitely what you want. There are apparently similar products available, like Burp, but I haven't used any of them, so I can't comment on their relative strengths or weaknesses.
If you want to look at what's going on across your network and not just what's happening between client and server, you'll want a packet analysis tool like WireShark. We occasionally have need of WireShark, but I'd wager that Fiddler is what we use at least 19 times in 20.
So, in short, Fiddler is something all our technical staff (technical support, product developers, quality assurance, professional services developers) are very familiar with; it's free; and it's very powerful.
With that said, if there are other tools you find that are similarly useful, we're always interested in checking them out.
