Annotation disappearing when changing Symbology
Afternoon all,
Im seeing a strange occurence. I have set up a Map Service with feature access to allow users to change Symbology and labeling. Eevrything works fine. However, I am noticing that as soon as a user accesses the properties of an individual layer to alter labels or symbology, all of the annotation layers I have present in the same service cease drawing. And they never return.
Is there some known incompatibility between annotation layers within services with feature access enabled? Did I miss a setting? Has anyone else ever noticed this problem?

Hi Andrew,
The issue you're describing sounds like it may be related to dynamic layers rather than feature access. Layer visualizations on dynamic map service layers cause the service to convert from "static layers" to "dynamic layers" in the viewer. Annotation layers are not supported by ArcGIS Server dynamic layers (http://server.arcgis.com/en/server/latest/publish-services/linux/supported-functionality-in-map-services.htm#ESRI_SECTION1_1E08135AC774438F85FAA53EBF898A7B) .
You should be able to work around this by publishing your annotation layers to a different service where dynamic layers is disabled.
Hope that helps!

Hi Andrew,
I'm noticing much the same thing. Annotation does not print or export if per request modification of symbology is active. If I take it out and republish the service, everything works normally. Did you find out anything new about this?0 -
Hello Amanda & Dave,
Unfortunately I have not seen or learned anything new about this. The behavior continues.
I understand that I can publish my annotation layers to a different service and everything will work just fine. I have verified this. But that means that I will the features and the annotation for the same layer on separate services. This would increase the administration effort required for the administration of my services, Geocortex Site,s Table of COntents, etc. This seems counter-intuitive to me.
Be that as it may, I guessing that the behavior (disappearing annotation when changing the symbology of feature layers in dynamically available services) we are seeing is an ESRI issue, not a Geocortex one. Since ESRI has stated this limitation in their documentation, it would seem that ESRI may be the more appropriate place to lodge a complaint / enhancement request. Would both of you agree?0 -
I am experiencing the same issue as a consumer of MapServices published by other agencies. Would there be a way for Essentials to not allow Layer Options for an annotation layer? Simply hide the "Layer Actions" arrow for Annotation Layers. Problem solved? 0
