    Hi Sylvia,

Could you please post the workflow or more details re activities that you are using?

When exactly you would like see labels? Before save the geometry to the database? What do you mean with “if the user deletes the features” are you adding highlight when geometry is selected or when geometry is saved? Can you use clear highlight command to remove highlight when user deletes feature? If you are not seeing labels when features is saved to database it might be a map service refresh problem or cache problem ... I think that we are able to help you more with more details.

    Thank you

My feautes look like this, even though I have an "update graphic layer" in the workflow. I would like them to either have a different colour including labels or be highlighted so the user can see which points they have just created. However if I put highlights into my workflow, if the user uses the inbuilt editing tools to delete the feature, the highlight remains. I imagine this is because the map isn't refreshing after the feature is deleted.

I managed to partly resolve what I wanted by adding a highlight features in my workflow then using a generic clear markup, clear highlights and clear selection just before my map refreshes. That way my user can see the point features they have created which are highlighted when they draw the next part, a polygon. Otherwise, I have a clear selected toolbar however I don't think my users would know to use that tool, so its easier to just wipe the selection from my workflow.

    It looks a good compromise.

In case you are looking for another idea you could add/use an attribute of your feature (status, date, ...) to identify that that feature is “new” and base the symbology on that attribute. For Example we have a status that initially is empty. When changes occur to a feature we set the status to ‘Edited’ and there is a symbology (colour) associated to the edited status. With other operations feature’s status changes so there is a different symbology (colour) associated to a new status ...

This would resolve the problem of a deleted feature as no symbology would be present in that area when feature is deleted ... just an idea but you would need to see if it would make sense in your application.

    thanks Francesca for your input

for how long do you keep a feature as "new?" do you then manually change the status back to not new or incorporate it into your workflow?

do you use the update graphics layer task in a workflow to change the symbology?

    Hi Sylvia,

We have a business process that changes status so it is easier, probably. You could change status in next session (next time that user loads/reloads viewer status could be updated) or when another feature is added.

We set symbology at map service level based on status attribute so as soon value in the attribute is changed symbology changes (obviously after “refresh map” activity, pan or zoom).

We use “Update graphic layer” activity only when geometry/feature is not saved to database yet: user draws a geometry, we run some validations and add geometry to the map with “Update graphic layer” activity while we ask the user to confirm that that’s the geometry that they meant to add. If they want to save new geometry we add feature to DB and remove feature from “Update graphic layer” so symbology shown is the one coming from map service.

    Hi Francesca,

I've discovered feature services don't show labels but map services do. So how do you have your users edit a feature service but display a map service? unless you only allow them to edit through a workflow.

Yes, we only allow users to edit features using workflows because we have a number of validations to apply given by business requirements. The viewer loads map services (lighter to load as well) and obviously edits are done to feature service.
