Is there a way to sort related features by a field?

I would like to be able to sort related features by a specified field.  Not sure if I am missing something but i don't see a way to do this.  does anyone know of way to make this happen?

  As it is a list of dates you might find problems in sort them in the order that you like depending on the field type that you have in your map service ... please post more details if above post it is not the answer.

  In a similar vein, we would like to be able to specify the default sort order of a related table, i.e. a table that is related to a layer. The functionality seems to be there in the ArcGIS Javascript API (https://developers.arcgis.com/javascript/3/jsapi/featuretable-amd.html) (using the sort property of gridOptions), but I don't know enough to know how to access it without rewriting the HTML5 viewer!
