Image Service?
Hello,
I have multiple years worth of ortho imagery, covering different extents, that I'd like to display in our map viewer. Up until this point, I've created cached map services to display the orthos but would like to explore the possibility of using an image service. Can anyone who's currently using image services provide some guidance on how to start or share the dos and don'ts?

We publish all our orthos as separate image services, mainly because you can just right-click on them in ArcCatalog and select 'Share as Service.' :)
We also have a couple map services that include rasters as basemaps. I can't tell the difference.
Image services have a different set of capabilites that are specific to rasters that you won't get with a map service (some require the advanced Image Server licensing). If you aren't using those raster functions, I don't think it matters which you choose. Performance-wise, as long as they are both cached, image services and map services should perform the same. I've heard that the caching process is faster for image services, though. And if you do have an Image Server you can publish mosaic datasets and may not need to cache at all.0 -
I have an aerial viewer that has 10 different City aerials and 6 different County aerials that I think works pretty well. We don't have an Image Server, since it would cost more. Probably easier with Imager Server, but easy enough to do without...

You can give me a call if you'd like Rebecca and I can give you a run-down. 0 -
Thanks all! I'll call you next week, Mike :) 0 -
Hi Mike, do you have a single composite image service, with multiple years/copies of the imagery, (ESRI referred to it as a 'master mosaic dataset', comprised of the individual mosaic dataset for each year) and been able to implement a time (or other) selector in a viewer?
Anyone else doing something like this???0 -
Which Mike? If me, each is a separate cached map service, with time slider. 0
