Show only visible features in Legend on Printed Maps

Is there a way to restrict the legend on a printed map to show only features in the visible extent?  We have about 40 zoning classifications and the user map only needs to show about 10.

 

Also - is there a way to let the user pick and choose what layers are symbolized in the legend?

  We don't have any plans to implement legend filtering any time soon.

   

  The quickest short term solution would be to replace the legend with a static image showing only what you want your users to see.

   

  Dynamically calculating the legend can be done with report scripting, although it's not easy to write or troubleshoot.  Similarly, allowing your users to configure the legend at runtime could be done with a workflow, although again it would not be a simple task.
