How do you trigger form validation or the validation event with a custom click event?

I have an item picker and a button bar on a form and have tried setting required to true and creating a subworkflow for the validation event of the item picker, but when I click the button that I have configured to cause validation nothing is happening. Does the validation need to be triggered in some way if the button bar has a custom click event?
