Unpredictable Printing Errors
For the last 4 years that i have launched our staff wide internal mapping applications via GC, this printing error has been popping up here and there and I do not have an answer for it nor have I gotten a definitive solution from tech support.
The error message is as follows:
"ALERT"
"Print error: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. Exception from HRESULT: 0x88982F8A"
I understand that the browser times out because of the amount of information or resolution it is undertaking, but I have never been able to explain to my clients why it happens sometimes aside from that.
Aside from telling my clients to make sure their computer has all of its updates and to turn off any layers not in the map extent of the the print job, what else can i tell them to hedge any printing issues?
Thanks

Greetings!
We have been experiencing the same print error issue for a few years, too. It has occurred since our Silverlight viewer days on a decommissioned server. The same issue has migrated to our latest HTML5 viewer implementation. My very unscientific wild guess was that there is a print/pdf cache that gets full from viewers generating pdf files to print throughout the day.
For the longest time, my solution was to restart our Windows 2012 Server as a scheduled task every morning at 3:30 AM. This little 'hack' definitely cuts down on the frequency of this print error. For about the past 8 months, this print error occurs almost once every two weeks. But in the past five days, it has happened twice during business hours and I would prefer to not do a manual server restart since it takes the map viewer offline for +/- 5 minutes.
Talking to one of our IT Wizards, another way to perhaps resolve this issue is going into the Server Manager > Tools > IIS Manager > Connections > DefaultAppPool > Recycling > Recycling Conditions. I now have specific times set (7:57 AM, 12:00 PM) that the DefaultAppPool is recycled which brings map viewers offline for about 30 seconds, twice a day, instead of manually restarting the server when a user reports a print error and takes the map viewers offline for about 5 minutes. I also disabled the early morning scheduled task restart.
We implemented the Recycling of the Default App Pool at specific times for the first time last night and I believe this will resolve any future print error issues.
Why does this happen? Is it because there a directory that is full of pdf files that need to be deleted? In the past, I could just delete pdf files that were more than a year old. However, I am no longer able to find the directory of these files.
I am hoping that a forum moderator will see my user hack and will hopefully respond with a best practice solution. As stated above and in the initial thread, this issue has been around for years I have yet to see a solution regarding this issue.
Please advise.
Thank you,
