Can Get Application Data in Workflow 5 retrieve a value set by a XAML workflow's Set External Value activity?
I have a XAML workflow called by URL parameter that takes in an argument, then sets the value of that argument with a Set External Value activity. I try to retrieve that external value with a Get Application Data activity in Workflow 5, but the value is NULL.
Are the two activities incompatible?

No, the activities use separate collections so you can't read one from the other.

@Ryan Cooney? , @Stefan Schweigert? Is the only workaround for this to build an Essentials workflow that gets/sets application data and get Workflow 5 to call that? Or is there a way of storing values in both Essentials and Workflow 5 that both can read?
These types of workarounds make it harder to transition from Essentials to Series 5, so more support in Workflow 5 for accessing Essentials features would be helpful.
