Place raster/georeferenced image on map without hosting it as a layer in a service?

Hi,

Is there a way of placing a georeferenced image, e.g. raster or geoTiff on the map without hosting it as a layer? My issue is that I have a very large number of species distributions - too many to host them in a layer catalog as density rasters or as clustered point features . My user does not need to interact much with the distribution, just identify areas of interest. Ideally, I would use a simple species name to file name table look up and add the file to the map. Or if that does not work, I've heard of tweaks where the source data of a running service is exchanged - but could not really find useful information. Is there something like a place image function?
