Map tip positioning - goes off screen?

I've run into the issue of map tips appearing off screen in essentials viewer for HTML5 (4.14.2). There are other old posts in the forum that suggest panning the map to the clicked feature when this happens however I'm finding the viewer's response to this extremely inconsistent. I'm finding it behaves perfectly for the first click, but then appears to completely ruin the viewer. Subsequent clicks don't invoke a maptip, bring up pushpins (which are turned off in my viewer) and zooming in and out behaves like zooming in on an image rather than a map service - the symbols just get bigger and fuzzier.

Is this a bug? I've successfully added commands to other functions in the .json configs (eg. zooming to the results on global search) without an issue but this one is not working for me at all.
