Switching tabs resets map extent to initial extent

Hi.  I'm developing an app that has multiple tabs.  One tab contains just the map.  If I zoom in on the map, then click on another tab, when I go back to the map tab, it has reset to the initial extent.  Is there a way of preserving the existing extent when clicking between tabs?

  I don't know of “preventing”, but you can keep track of the current map extent in memory (through events and a workflow), then apply that saved extent when the map gets focus again.
