Subject: VertiGIS Studio Web – Parallel Portal Upgrade and Post‑Installer Configuration
Hi Ken Lyon ,
Hope you’re doing well. I’d appreciate your guidance on the following VertiGIS Studio Web configuration scenario we’re currently working on.
We currently have VertiGIS Studio Web installed on Server A, and the Post Installer is configured to register against an ArcGIS Enterprise Portal 9.x hosted on Server X.
We are now planning a parallel upgrade of ArcGIS Enterprise, where:
- The existing Portal 9.x will continue running on Server X
- A new ArcGIS Enterprise 11.x Portal will be installed on Server Y
Since we have only one VertiGIS Studio Web server (Server A), we would like to understand whether it is possible to:
- Register or configure both Portal instances (9.x and 11.x) using the VertiGIS Studio Web Post Installer, and
- Access or maintain separate Web Designer instances for both portals from the same VertiGIS Studio Web installation during the parallel upgrade period.
Please confirm whether this configuration is supported and, if not, what the recommended approach is for running VertiGIS Studio Web during a parallel ArcGIS Enterprise upgrade.

Hi Vijay,
It is not possible to configure a single installation of VertiGIS Studio Web to be registered with two separate Portals simultaneously. It is also not possible to put two separate installations of VertiGIS Studio Web on the same server. Therefore, if you are wanting to have both environments up simultaneously, it would be necessary to install VertiGIS Studio Web on a different server.
Another thing to note is that VertiGIS Studio Web connects to Portal items like web maps, workflows, reports, print layouts, etc. by storing their URLs, which include the hostname for the Portal and the ID of the item. If these URLs change, it can break the app. This means that simply copying items from one Portal to another may result in quite a bit of additional work since you will have to manually go in and update all of these URLs so that they point to the correct items in your new Portal. I believe Esri has a way of essentially “cloning” your Portal, which some users have had success with when performing server cutovers.
For more information, please open a support ticket with us. The Support Centre is more of a community forum than a direct way of reaching us, so for questions where you need timely answers from the VertiGIS team, it's always best to open a ticket. Many of us who answer questions here are from different teams at the company (for example, Ken works on VertiGIS Studio Workflow), so even if you tag us directly, we may not be the ones with the answers you need.
