Support for Esri GroupLayers in VertiGIS Studio Web
Subject: Support for Esri GroupLayers in VertiGIS Studio Web
Hi team,
I’m reaching out to ask whether there are any plans to support Esri GroupLayers natively in VertiGIS Studio Web.
At the moment, it appears that when a feature service includes GroupLayers, VertiGIS Studio Web flattens them and adds each sublayer individually. This results in the loss of logical grouping, visibility management, and TOC structure that are otherwise supported when using GroupLayers in native Esri applications (e.g., ArcGIS Online, Web AppBuilder, Experience Builder).
This behavior presents some significant challenges, particularly for SaaS organizations managing complex applications with many layers. Without GroupLayer support:
- Configuration becomes more time-consuming and error-prone
- The TOC can become overwhelming and less intuitive for end users
- There’s increased overhead for maintaining visibility rules across related layers
Since GroupLayers are a standard part of Esri's feature service and JS API capabilities, I'm wondering if this is on the VertiGIS Studio Web product roadmap and if so, whether there's any estimated timeline for support.
Any guidance or recommended workarounds in the meantime would also be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Niek Broekhoven

Hi Niek Broekhoven
Thank you for reaching out! Support for group layers should already exist in VertiGIS Studio Web. To do this, add the entire feature service to the web map in Map Viewer (Map Viewer Classic does not support group layers), then add the web map to your VertiGIS Studio Web app.
I hope that helps! If not, could you please elaborate on how you are adding the layers to the app?

Hi Alisa Lindley,
Thank you for your response!
I should clarify that I'm already aware that GroupLayers can be used when the entire feature service is added to a web map in Map Viewer (not Classic) and then consumed in a VertiGIS Studio Web app. That approach does work as expected.
However, what I'm referring to is a different scenario:
We would like to add a GroupLayer directly using the "Add Layer" widget in a VertiGIS Studio Web application without relying on a web map. When attempting to do this, the GroupLayer is not supported: the layers inside the group are added as individual, ungrouped layers, and the hierarchical structure and group-level visibility are lost. This limitation is problematic for us, especially in SaaS environments where dynamic layer loading is essential, and relying on preconfigured web maps isn’t always practical.
Could you confirm whether native support for GroupLayers via the Add Layer widget is on the product roadmap, or if there’s a recommended workaround for maintaining layer grouping in this use case?
Thanks again for your support!
Best regards,

Hi Niek Broekhoven
It looks like we have a feature request filed for this as 327645. That does not guarantee that it is on the product roadmap, but it does mean that our Development team is aware of the desired functionality. I have added a reference back to this Ideas post so that our developers can track stakeholders more easily.
In the meantime, you can configure the Add Layer tool to add layers in bulk. This will not preserve the group layer structure, but it may help if your users are currently having to add layers one at a time. The configuration for the command chain would look like this:

Hi Alisa,
Thank you for the clarification and for linking this to feature request 327645.
We understand that group structure preservation isn’t currently supported via the Add Layer widget and appreciate the workaround suggestion for bulk layer addition. While helpful in some cases, the lack of true GroupLayer support remains a key limitation for us, particularly when it comes to maintaining logical grouping and visibility management across dynamic layer sets in SaaS environments. This is especially relevant as we aim to adopt and promote self-service mapping workflows supported by both Esri and VertiGIS, where users can intuitively assemble and manage their own map content without relying on preconfigured web maps.
We’re happy to provide more input or context if that would help shape the direction of feature 327645. In the meantime, we’ll keep working within the current setup and explore what’s possible with the existing tools.
Thanks again for your support and responsiveness!
Best regards,
Niek Broekhoven

Hi,
Is there any news on how and when the Esri ArcGIS Online Group layers can be manually added as a user?
