Handling for Address Abbreviations
It would be extremely valuable if the search could use a predefined substitution list for parts of addresses that are commonly abbreviated.
IE if you search for Drive the search would look for Drive or Dr, and vice versa. Could capture all street types (St, Ave, Blvd, Dr, Pl, Cres, etc) as well as Cardinal Directions (N, E, S, W).

Search supports this approach; we name these substitutions “synonyms”.
But at this time only in the backend; we are still to add support to configure them in Search Designer, in advanced settings of the search suggestions, like here:
One could configure and test them (till the user story is ready) using backend VSS API:

Hello,
I'm not sure that this works as a temporarly solution as the advanced options are only available for Locales other than Default, and I am unable to add a locale for English so unclear how I would add the Synonyms.

That's true; it is currently not possible. We have filed a new user story, to add localization configuration for English locale as well, for VSS Designer: User Story 313780 Enable configuration of localization for English locale in resource config page
A temporary workaround could be to use the VSS API (see my comments in the previous post).
But we have to verify first that it works, .. we have implemented this functionality in the very beginning, .. but it might be incomplete.
