Grouping Features based on a field/source in Result List

Is it at all possible to have users make a selection and then group that selection based on a field in the dataset? For example a user selects a area containing multiple water valves  & hydrants ideally we would like those grouped by their layer type. Right now all I get is a long single item list in my results list. Thanks
