Idea: Measure tool multiple measurements without reactivating tool and cursor thickness
PlanifiéeTwo ideas here for VSW measure tools based on user feedback…
Idea 1: It would be nice if the measure tool would continue to be activated after completing a measurement. Currently, the user has to click the measure tool each time they want to make a measurement. This becomes very click-heavy and hard on the wrist when making many measurements and having to move the mouse from the map to the toolbar for each measurement. The measure tool can be a mode that can be toggled on or off, similar to the snapping command. This was the default behaviour in GVH.
Idea 2: The green crosshair cursor on the measure tool is a few pixels wide and non-transparent. This symbol is helpful to locate the cursor in a good indication that the user is in measure mode when hovering over the map. However, when making very detailed measurements (at the pixel level) on drone orthoimagery, the thicker crosshair cursor obfuscates the exact click location. It would be nice if there was an option to temporarily remove the green crosshair to facilitate greater click location accuracy. Perhaps pressing ‘Ctrl’ while measuring could change the crosshair to 1 px x 1px wide lines.

I recall that Cam mentioned the pattern for ‘sticky’ tools as a “Work in Progress” in the Aug 1, 2024 Road Ahead webinar. What VertiGIS is calling ‘sticky’ tools is the same thing described by Idea 1. Cam Barnard, I hope the sticky tools pattern can be prioritized as this has been a common user feedback. Thanks!

Correct … this is ‘sticky tools’

I agree, sticky tools are very handy.

Is there any update on when ‘sticky tools’ might be available?

Can the Repeat Action command fulfil your needs?
(from the release notes of VSW 5.33:)
Added a powerful new pattern that allows tools to run either until canceled or for a specific number of repetitions. This functionality is enabled through the new system.repeat-action command, offering enhanced flexibility for tasks requiring iterative actions. For instance, you can configure a tool to capture geometry for a set number of points, performing subsequent actions. Alternatively, you can set up a tool to repeatedly capture geometry from clicks on the map, identify features, and add them incrementally to a results list. To help users get started, we included detailed examples in the documentation.

In function yes, in practice no. It gives end users the appearance of an error as opposed to a notification, and is unintuitive to close. As we are producing maps for public consumption we have very limited opportunity to convey UI quirks and need it to be intuitive.
Essentially if there were no banner, and clicking the button again turned it off instead of closing the banner it would perfectly replicate the sticky tools of GCX.0 -
Matt Mclean , looks like VertiGIS is looking to make the banner appear less like an error message. See related discussion here: https://support.vertigis.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/23336016965906-Hint-text-for-new-system-repeat-action
To quote Cam Barnard from the other thread:
We needed an independent way of indicating that a repeat tool was active because of the variety of places this can be invoked from … could be toolbar, button, feature action, workflow, etc. … but we still needed a clear way for the end user to know that something was ‘running’ and could be ‘cancelled’.
Can there please be an exception to not have the banner message appear if a repeating action was triggered from a button? This is how GVH used to work - why change an already intuitive user interface? Click button = tool is activated, click button again = tool is deactivated. Simple.
