Data link feature hyperlinks in inherited child sites

It looks like feature hyperlinks that use data links on a child site don't work unless you update the data link name to be {ParentSite-datalink.field}. Any reason you have to do this with feature hyperlinks whereas workflows and other things don't require updates on child sites?
