Can I display coded value domain descriptions and subtype descriptions instead of codes in Essentials?

Im having trouble displaying the descriptions of coded domain vlaues and for coded subtypes.  All I get is the actual code, not the description contianed within the domain or the subtype.  Is there some setting (whether it be in the service or in Essentials) Im missing?
