Active directory - Workflow

We'd like to be able to connect to active directory to obtain a valid list of the organisation's users. We were envisaging a SQL activity, which connects to AD and provides a list of users. This would be the input to an autocomplete box. We'd then like to retrieve/store the user's email. Is this possible? Our production team say that you'd need an LDAP connection type in the sql activity. If this is the case we can log it as an Idea but maybe someone has acheived this with another method.
