Can parent folders be automatically turned on when child layers are checked?

I have many folders with subfolders or layers in each. Is it possible that when a user checks on a child folder or layer that the parent/top folder is also checked on automatically? So far I have only been able to get this work on layers and their immediate parents, but not the whole folder. Using viewer html5 2.8.2
