Text display in a textArea

Is there a way to control how text is displayed in a textArea? Say you have a comment field, and you want the user to be able to see everything she writes into the textArea without having to scroll horizontally

  You'll be able to specify a word wrap option on Text Area form inputs in version 5.6. This will be available in a few days.
