What is the proper way to display a feature service with symbolization?

I have a feature service "NG Meters" that I want to allow editing and also sybolize using a unique value.

 

 

1. Editing is working.

 

2. Symbolization is working.

 

3. Both layers are showing up when I identify the object on the map (feature service and map service for the object).

 

 

 

IF I put the map service in the Layer list I get to see the symbols for the meter correctly.

 

IF I put the feature service in the Layer list I only get a black dot.

 

 

Since the Map service is the only layer I chose in the layer list I'm confused as to why the Feature service is also showing on the map.

 

I'm also confused why the feature service only displays a black dot instead of the symbolization (is this always the case)?

  Having a map service and feature service in the Map Services tab meant both were being drawn, even though I only chose one for the layer list. This was a misunderstanding of the functionality by me.
