Change maps on deployment using environment values

Hi Yannick - There isn't an easy way to do this. I'd love to hear more about your use case for wanting a DIFFERENT web map for dev and test and prod. We considered this use case early on, but realized that it would be VERY difficult for people to manually keep their dev / test / prod webmaps consistent. Therefore we automatically create (and update) copies of the webmaps as you push from dev - test - prod. The Environment values are used to change the CONTENT inside the webmap. So you could have your dev webmap configured to point to different services than your prod webmap. Or, you could use this to change some other aspect of webmap configuration between dev and prod.

Does this make sense for your use case?

Hi Cam, thanks for the response. I think your workflow makes sense, I did not know that pushing to production created a copy of the web maps/scenes yet. This also explains why it didn't work the way I expected.

It's a nice feature if you want to use 1 portal for the whole deploy journey. Our use case is a tough one though, because we want to use different portals for dev / test / prod. I thought using the Environment Values would be a solution for this, but I guess the best way is to simply change all the uri's when copying the app to the next portal, using the ArcGIS Online Assistant.

Hi Yannick - the good news is that we have already planned to look at the use case of using dev / test / prod across Esri Portals. We think it would work the same way where the webmaps are created on the first push, and updated on subsequent pushes (i.e. the Prod webmap copy is created the first time you push to prod, subsequent pushes to Prod update the webmap). We are are going to do a research / proof of concept soon on this to identify the challenges.

    Hi Cam,

I also have different portals for dev and prod. Any updates on the best way to do this? At the moment I am just editing the json to point at web map and print template prod urls then zipping and uploading.

    Regards,

    Richard
