Analytics?

@Richard Webb? It is possible today; but only in the sense that Analytics can be wired up to work with any JavaScript web application (possible, not simple, and limited information). We are working with the Analytics team to get a richer, native support for Geocortex Web within Analytics.

Any update on this? Do we have to install the new studio analytics to gather stats from web viewers? It looks like a high bar to add another server and agents. What about SaaS hosted viewers?

Hey Marc Rempel, VertiGIS Studio Analytics is required to collect stats from VertiGIS Studio Web viewers. VertiGIS Studio Analytics is only available on-prem. Both on-prem & SaaS VertiGIS Studio Web viewers are supported.

For example, here's a screenshot of our demo environment VertiGIS Studio Analytics reporting on our VertiGIS Studio Web Sample app, these are session data and trends for the month of December 2023:

Note how we can see how not only how often the app was being used, but also detail on specific actions taken and when. This is one example of the level of detail that VertiGIS Studio Analytics provides.

Okay, thanks Gareth. I guess I will need to find a server to run VertiGIS Studio Analytics on-prem to track our new viewers.

You're welcome, Marc Rempel! I understand that you would far prefer a SaaS-based offering, is that correct? I can see the value in that, especially if you are already using VSW (and probably AGOL?) SaaS. I imagine the idea of minimizing the number of servers you have to manage yourself, so you can concentrate on GIS issues rather than IT server management, is ideal.

Paging @..., the product owner for VertiGIS Studio Analytics. This is valuable feedback.

Yeah, a SaaS based offering would be great for the exact reasons you described.

Another enhancement for our setup would be agent installation support for linux based installations of ArcGIS Server and Portal, though I understand how that might be a big lift.

    Thanks for confirming.

Regarding Linux support, while I cannot guarantee any development, you have sparked my curiosity.

    I have a few questions:

    • What are the reasons for running your ArcGIS environment on Linux instead of Windows? (I assume licensing and scalability may be factors)
    • Where is this environment located? Is it hosted in the cloud?
    • Are you using SaaS VSW to consume your ArcGIS Enterprise services hosted on that Linux environment?
    • If VertiGIS Studio Analytics were offered as a managed services solution, where we host the server for you and provide configuration access to the Analytics hub (basically the ASP model), would this be a potential solution for you?

Our organization's system admin is a big linux person, so has moved to get as much on linux as possible. Since ArcGIS offers linux versions, we have gone that route. I would be happy to use Windows versions myself. The linux versions have worked well, but are harder to interface with on the backend.

Where is this environment located? Is it hosted in the cloud?

We have a type of kubernetes on-prem quasi local cloud setup. Hardware is in house for our Portal/ArcGIS Server.

Are you using SaaS VSW to consume your ArcGIS Enterprise services hosted on that Linux environment?

    Yes

If VertiGIS Studio Analytics were offered as a managed services solution, where we host the server for you and provide configuration access to the Analytics hub (basically the ASP model), would this be a potential solution for you?

Potentially, though it would probably not get around the need for the Analytics agents on linux, right?

Thanks for your super prompt and detailed responses, Marc. That's pretty cool that you're running your ArcGIS environment on Linux (or at least, I think so). I can only imagine that does add a layer of complexity for backend connectivity though as we're seeing here.

To answer your question "Potentially, though it would probably not get around the need for the Analytics agents on linux, right?" you're right. This would only permit you to monitor the VSW SaaS applications at the viewer level. You'd have all the detailed data about sessions, usage metrics. What you'd lose out on by not having an agent on the server would be the server OS level monitoring of CPU, RAM resources. I know ArcGIS Monitor, which could be considered an adjunct to VertiGIS Studio Analytics, does support Linux system monitoring though lacks monitoring of any viewer session data let alone VertiGIS Studio Web.

    A few further thoughts there:

    • Linux support for VertiGIS Studio Analytics agents is technically possible; however, we haven't heard much demand from customers so it's difficult for us to justify it at a business level. The Linux crowd is growing but quiet.
    • VertiGIS Studio at a high level is primarily composed of static web content served up and JavaScript that's executed in the client. There isn't much if anything that defines it as needing Microsoft IIS to run stuff server-side. I'm not making any promises, though I'm eagerly anticipating VertiGIS Studio products being able to deploy outside of a Windows environment (Linux, containers? who knows...)

In the meantime, I'd suggest we continue this conversation with your Account Manager @....

Hi Gareth, following up on your comments I would definitely be interested in a SAAS version of Analytics to work alongside our SAAS VertiGIS Studio and AGOL setup. With our previous on premise installations the older version of Analytics provided a lot of useful usage and support information.

Hey Peter Jackson thanks for chiming in, this sort of feedback is helpful to inform our decision making.

Personally, I'd love to see Studio Analytics in a SaaS or ASP deployment as it makes it all the more accessible and would reduce onboarding time and therefore greater value.

I know a SaaS flavour of Studio Analytics has been considered by our product team, and the value is clear. While I can't speak for the product team, there is a technical or commercial challenge element in that the scale (and therefore cost) of the backing database can get quite large depending on the scale of resources monitored. It may be that there needs to be a proper commercial model for that cost variability.

I know @... and other members of the Studio Analytics team are reading, and that having evidence that supports this business case helps. Keep the feedback coming!
