My best guess is that you are attempting to re-symbolize something that we haven't completed support for yet (e.g. a point feature). Currently you should expect line and polygon features to work. Always hard for me to decide to release functionality that is complete when not everything is there yet, but ultimately I think it is better to get what is done and working into your hands.

Right after I posted I noticed in the "What's New" 5.13 added the polygon and line styling but no point styling. Thanks for confirming.

2 years later and I am getting this message for all my feature layers (hosted on AGOL) regardless of type. What am I missing?

I'm on whatever version SaaS in the US is on right now.

I submitted a support ticket and the upshot was I needed to check the checkbox in Pro for “Use symbol types compatible with all clients” when publishing. This degrades a few of my symbols but at least now the layers can be styled. Thanks to Amanda Frech

Hi, Heather Widlund, even now (at VSW 5.40) it's still necessary to check this option when publishing. The reason is that VertiGIS doesn't support Esri CIM symbology yet and it appears that the CIM symbology tends to live in the AGOL/Portal item. Even though the renderer in the layer REST endpoint marks a Simple Symbol type (SimpleMarker, SimpleLine, SimpleFill, etc.) the Layer Style action bounces on the settings of the web map, unless “Use symbol types compatible with all clients” is checked. Only found out via VS support as well, as it is not explicitly documented (would be convenient if it was btw).
