Add the ability to display basemaps in the layer list including a transparancy slider
PlanifiéeIn GVH (HTML5 viewer) basemaps could be added to the layer list. With this users could adjust the transparancy in the viewer using the transparancy slider. In VertiGIS Studio Web the basemaps from a web map or web scene are not added to the layer list in the VSW application and cannot be adde manually either. Therefore they cannot be made transparant by the user. Adjusting transparancy for basemaps is especially useful for 3D web scenes which include layers under the ground.

I'm not sure if we will add the basemaps with transparency to the existing layer list ... but we will start figuring out how to solve this business problem.

We have users requesting this feature yesterday. They want the ability to mash-up the topographic basemap with aerial photos for example. They keep nagging me about this functionality that they had in GVH. I for one liked the feature because I didn't have to add yet another layer to the map for them to get the roads for example or the building names from the topo map. Please consider adding this functionality to VSW.

Agree, this is something that we use all the time in the GVH

We also definitely need it as users rely on it in Essentials

Yes, this was a very useful and well-used feature in GVH and would be appreciated in Web.

Would also find this helpful as a user wants to be able to have no basemap, so this seems like the best solution (fully transparent) so I don't have to add a blank one

As mentioned previously, this was a very well-used feature in GVH. We have added a blank base map as a workaround but it's definitely not ideal and involves extra steps for users, needing to switch between base maps when they often just want to increase transparency for a few seconds and then return the initial base map back to its original transparency.

It was a powerfull function, so i would like to have it back

Agree - this would be so beneficial for our users!!

More of our users are requesting this. They want to turn down the transparency of the basemaps in their prints. They prefer to find the basemaps in the layer list with the other layers. I want it to share on/off status with the basemaps so they aren't confused at which vintage they're looking at when they have certain aerials turned on in the layer list and another for the basemap.

We need this too, especially for printing and mashing up with the topo basemap. Please implement!

any update on this? i don't believe i heard it mentioned in the road ahead webinars

Something I have been playing with is adding the basemaps to the webmap (with the service), and then you do have the ability to change transparency of the basemaps in the layer list. Check it out.
So I have a group called Basemaps, and then the basemaps added to the web map via wmts or service url - then I see the ability to have transparency and it seems to work. We are still in the process of migration but this is what I have found so far as a possible option.

Liza Markey Yeah, that's what I had to do for a workaround for my users, but it doesn't sync with the Basemaps widget so it's confusing to understand which aerial you're actually looking at as they obscure each other and are across different widgets you have to click through. My users wouldn't want to give up the basemap time slider widget, so I can't get rid of the Basemaps widget completely

Gosh very true - well scratch that haha, our users wouldn't want to give up the basemap slider either….

+1 on this one. This feature is frequently requested by our clients and would address a common need.

Another +1 for this request, our users will not be happy having to choose between time or transparency as they use both currently.

Hello,
I have gotten very close to this working and thought I would share here incase it helps others or someone has and idea on how to finish this solution off.
I have made two workflows, one that sets the base layer opacity to an application value stored in memory (see image below)
And another that sets the memory value from a form slider

I have also leveraged the event listener to carry over the transparency if the user changes base map groups

My two outstanding issues with this solution are: It does not set transparency when switching between basemap not in series as the slider is neither activated or deactivated in this case.
Transparency is lost when the Basemap Slider is used as it updates the transparency for blending.
So my two questions to make a fully functional solution are:
1. Is there an event I can listen for to detect any change to the visible basemap layers?
2. Is it possible to intercept the basemap slider so I could apply transparancy on change?0 -
Hi Matt Mclean - some interesting ideas in your solution for sure. I've no real answers to your two questions other than perhaps doing something outside of the layer list/ui experience. You could potentially create a workflow form/panel that is dedicated to just showing the basemap layers, and in using check boxes, and sliders, you could then certainly monitor for change events and program accordingly. Workflow forms and events are pretty cool with this new version of Workflow and some pretty cool stuff can be achieved. It's a little clunky I guess to have to do it this way, but probably do-able. Good luck in the mean time. I hope someone can help out with this.

Cam Barnard What is the status and scope of the “planned” implementation of basemap transparency control? This is another one of those things we shouldn't have to go down a rabbit hole to configure on our own. Any update?

Cam Barnard Just bumping this again for the ability to have transparency sliders for basemaps. Any update?
2 -
Cam, bumping this yet again requesting a status update.
Particularly as we move further into the 3D space, our utilities staff will soon be screaming for this. And I'd rather not need to maintain a separate viewer simply to have the Portal web map have a semi-transparent basemap to accommodate one aspect of their viewer use!
