Add a View Source option to the workflow designer
Not plannedLike in the Web designer, add a Ctrl+Shift+E option to the Workflow designer that shows the workflow's source JSON, and has an option to edit the JSON manually. This can be a quicker alternative to exporting/importing the workflow to/from a file.

Good suggestion

Item Manager is what I use for this today, and I think having a separate tab is a better barrier for people who might not be suited to meddle with the source of a workflow.
In my opinion, we can't support a workflow that hasn't been made in the Designer- but if it loads in the designer then it doesn't really matter.

Malcolm Walker Of course, and there's ArcGIS assistant too.
But the downside is that, after a change, the Workflow designer needs to reload that workflow, and that doesn't work if you have multiple tabs open in the designer. Pressing F5 will only reload the current workflow, and you'll lose all other tabs. If I have to close and reopen the workflow manually every time, I might as well use export/import.
And another thing, the Web designer already has a similar functionality, so why not add it to Workflow designer as well? The danger of messing things up is the same (or maybe even less so for Workflow, because workflow builders are maybe more technical)

Berend Veldkamp I think the biggest difference is that Web was designed to have a more intuitive, nested structure. There are guids here and there, but those are unique so can't be misunderstood. Workflows have a lot of numeric ids everywhere and aren't really designed for human consumption. I know it's handy for power users like yourself to be able to tweak things here and there when you know what you're doing.
I'd sooner put the effort into a multi-id url fragment to allow F5 to preserve all open workflows.
Just out of curiosity - what is it that you find you need to edit frequently in the source?
