Item Picker items displaying polygons with red symbol

Hi all,

I have a workflow that started with one of VertiGIS's “select parcel” sample (per my notes - I couldn't tell you exactly where I got the workflow now!!)

I have altered the workflow a great deal and have it working but I want to change the symbol of the items in the Item Picker. It is defaulting to this red shaded polygon symbol and I have no idea where it is set (items in the item picker on the left are those parcels highlighted in red in the image below).  You can ignore the buffer for this discussion.

How can I change this to not be red?  I am using features that have another symbol set as the input items for the itempicker.  Anyone seen this before and have suggestions of where I can look?

I know the json for the symbol is viable because I tested it on the buffer graphic.

I hope I am missing something very simple.
