Basemaps Series - Cannot Add from URL

Is there a way to add a basemaps series from a URL? It seems the only way is from ArcGIS Online for something that has been published to your content.

  The basemap picker would be great if it could load in any REST service URL. I actually tried putting a basemap group together in Portal (following Esri's instructions on how to do it), and while the Esri Enterprise apps would respect this new group of basemaps and present the Picker, alas, this did not work in VSW. Apparently it's not supported. I now need to add each basemap to a new ‘basemap’ folder in the underlying webmap configuration (new map viewer only) instead, and not use the VSW picker tool. Pretty frustrating really!

  I thought this was the case. Thanks for confirming. I will test out putting the basemaps in folders within the map viewer in AGOL.
