Workflow varibles not being recognized - 3.4

I'm finding with regularity, that if I add a new variable or edit a variable reference in any of the provided workflow examples (ex. SeachParcelID.xaml) the workflow stops recognizing the varible.

For example, if I add a variable in place of the "pid" variable in the SeachParcelID workflow.

Has anybody else come across a issue of variables being recognized in a workflow?
